About our symbols in the Workshop Schedule

2025 Reno Latin Dance Fest

Becoming a proficient social dancer requires a combination of physical, technical, and creative skills, as well as dedication and discipline.

To help guide you on your social dance journey, we’ve marked some of the essential skills and qualities needed to advance your social dancing in the Workshop Schedule.

Below you will find definitions of each symbol:

T = Technical Proficiency: you must master the fundamental techniques of your chosen style(s) of dance, which could include Salsa, Bachata, Cumbia, Cuban Rhythms & Traditions, Reggaeton, ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, or others. This includes having excellent control over your body, precision in movement, and proper alignment.

R = Repertoire: As a social dancer you need to continually build a repertoire of turn patterns, styling, footwork and more.

M = Musicality & Rhythm: you need to have a strong sense of rhythm and musicality. This helps you stay in sync with the music and your partner as you express the emotions and nuances of a song through your movements.

P = Physical Fitness: you need to be in excellent physical shape. Regular strength training, flexibility exercises, and cardiovascular conditioning are crucial to maintain stamina, prevent injuries, and execute complex movements.

B = Body Awareness: Understanding your own body and its capabilities is vital. You must be able to control and manipulate your body to achieve various dance movements and positions.

C = Creativity: Creativity is important for you to practice as a social dancer and/or choreographer so you can take advantage of opportunities to improvise or add your own interpretation to the music.

V = Versatility: Being proficient in multiple dance styles or techniques can make you a  more fun person to dance with and a more marketable dancer in the industry.

N = Networking and Business: Building connections in the dance world and understanding how to market yourself as a dancer can help in securing opportunities.

S = Stage Presentation: Depending on the type of dance, knowledge of costume design, makeup application, and stagecraft can be beneficial.

Remember that becoming a proficient social dancer is a journey, and it requires ongoing effort and commitment. Embrace the learning process, and don't be discouraged by setbacks. With dedication and continuous practice, you can become a more skilled and expressive social dancer over time.
